Though inspired by one of the artist’s paintings (above), Untitled (LO 425) is by no means a copy. The painting’s bright reds, purples, turquoises, and pastel blues give way in the final print to tones that convey the sense of cool moonlight. Owens arrived at the palette incrementally, after experimenting with a number of different color combinations. More brightly colored than the final print, the working proof reveals an intermediate color scheme between that of the painting and the final edition print (the numbers and X’s scattered across the proof indicate color revisions).
