Programming at the Center and Curatorial Records
As we transitioned into our project placements for year two, I was excited to further develop my skills in academic programming, so I took a placement with the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts during summer 2023. To contribute to the Center’s mission, I worked with the internship coordinator to evaluate and redesign the first-year curriculum for the next cohort of Howard University undergraduate interns. I considered the curriculum goals to program intern-centered experiences and seminars that would introduce students to art history and research methodologies while gaining insights into museum work. I expanded my programming skills, practiced human-centered design, and gained experience in building and leveraging professional networks and budgeting.
During the academic year, I worked in curatorial records and files, learning the intricacies of archival work and independent research. I strengthened my skills by conducting research on new acquisitions, finding and evaluating texts to add to bibliographies, and entering resources into the records of artworks in the National Gallery’s collections.
