Spanish Paintings of the Fifteenth through Nineteenth Centuries
Jonathan Brown and Richard G. Mann
Published 1990
184 pages
The Spanish painting collection at the National Gallery of Art, though small in size, is distinguished by important works by many of Spain’s greatest painters and is an important part of the old master collection. Ranking first are seven paintings by El Greco, both early and late; the second important group is comprised of seven portraits by Goya, spanning all but the last period of his activity. Also included are works by Murillo, Velázquez, and notable works from the 15th and earlier 16th centuries. The catalog includes a short biographical entry for each artist, followed by individual entries for paintings arranged by accession numbers. Technical notes summarize the contents of the conservation department’s examination reports. A list of changes of attribution and of title is included at the end of the volume.
