This catalog accompanied a collaborative exhibition from three museums whose combined collections of Paul Gauguin’s work are comprehensive. The exhibition included important masterpieces of painting and sculpture from the National Gallery of Art, the rich holdings of prints and drawings from the Art Institute of Chicago, and the almost encyclopedic reserves from the Musée d’Orsay, representing in abundance all aspects of Gauguin’s oeuvre. The catalog includes a chronology, a selection of writings by the artist, and a list of exhibitions. In addition, the curators of the participating museums each contributed essays on Gauguin’s self-portraits and each period of his career, illuminating and reappraising early works and suggesting new approaches to the study of Gauguin and his art. The catalog reproduces more than 200 works by Gauguin that were included in the exhibition.
