Overview: The exhibition focused on the collaborative efforts of Kate Trauman Steinitz (1889–1975), writer and librarian at the Elmer Belt Library of Vinciana, and the artist and writer Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) as documented by materials in the Schwitters-Steinitz collection. This archive of printed and manuscript material on Schwitters was compiled by Steinitz, who was a close friend of Schwitters from 1918 until his death in 1948, and was acquired by the National Gallery of Art Library in 1976. From 1924 to 1928 in Hannover, Germany, where Schwitters was born in 1887 and Steinitz lived from 1918 to 1936, the two collaborated to produce three children’s books, songs, plays and poems for two festivals, and an opera libretto.
