A specialist in 18th- and 19th-century French and British art, he has worked at the Frick Collection, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. His exhibitions include David d’Angers: Making the Modern Monument (Frick Collection, 2013), Luminous Worlds: British Works on Paper 1760–1900 (Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, 2016), Like Life: Sculpture, Color, and the Body (Met Breuer, 2018), Canova: Sketching in Clay (Art Institute of Chicago and National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., 2023), and Camille Claudel (forthcoming, Art Institute of Chicago and J. Paul Getty Museum, L.A., 2023). At the Art Institute of Chicago, he has been responsible for several important acquisitions, including The Shadow of Death, a major painting by the Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt; a unique polychrome portrait bust by French sculptor Camille Claudel; and Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi’s The Music Room.
