Associate Curator, Old Master Drawings
Stacey Sell received her PhD in art history from the University of Virginia in 1993 with a dissertation on Rembrandt's drawings. She worked in the department of prints at the Philadelphia Museum of Art for five years before arriving at the Gallery in 1998. She was curator of the exhibition The Artist's Vision: Romantic Traditions in Britain (2006) and has contributed to National Gallery of Art exhibition catalogs and publications including The Unfinished Print (2001), Private Treasures: Four Centuries of European Master Drawings (2007), and The McCrindle Gift: a Distinguished Collection of Drawings and Watercolors (2012), as well as other publications such as A Pioneering Collection: Master Drawings from the Crocker Art Museum (2010).
Kimberly Schenck
Head of Paper Conservation
Kimberly Schenck received her MS from the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation in 1988. Before coming to the National Gallery of Art in 2006, she was paper conservator and director of conservation at the Baltimore Museum of Art. She has contributed to the exhibition catalogs Matisse: Drawing Life (Queensland Art Gallery) and The Essence of Line: French Drawings from Ingres to Degas (Baltimore). She has published articles on drawings by Raphael, Giorgio Vasari's Libro de' Disegni, Asian papers in nineteenth-century prints, and engravings by Hendrik Goltzius.
John Oliver Hand
Curator of Northern Renaissance Painting
John Oliver Hand was educated at Denison University (BA studio art), the University of Chicago (MA art history), and Princeton University (MFA and PhD art history). In 1973 he joined the National Gallery of Art as curator of northern European painting. Among the exhibitions he has organized or coordinated are American Art Since 1960 (The Art Museum, Princeton University); The Exhibition of Archaeological Finds of the People's Republic of China (National Gallery of Art, 1974-1975); Master Paintings from the Hermitage and the State Russian Museum, Leningrad (National Gallery of Art, 1975); The Age of Bruegel: Netherlandish Drawings in the Sixteenth Century (National Gallery of Art and The Pierpont Morgan Library, NY, 1986-1987); and at the National Gallery of Art The Saint Anne Altarpiece by Gerard David (1992); Hans Memling's Saint John the Baptist and Saint Veronica (1994); Jan van Eyck's Annunciation (1994); and Prayers and Portraits: Unfolding the Netherlandish Diptych (2006). In addition to numerous articles and reviews in the field of northern Renaissance art, he has written the systematic catalogues for the National Gallery's collections of Early Netherlandish Painting, 1986 (with Martha Wolff) and German Paintings of the Fifteenth through Seventeenth Centuries (1993). Recent publications include Joos van Cleve: The Complete Paintings (2004), and National Gallery of Art: Master Paintings from the Collection (2004).
