Washington, DC—The National Gallery of Art announced today that we welcomed 3,829,812 visitors in 2023 to our 25-acre campus located on the National Mall. This represents an 18 percent increase over the previous year’s attendance of 3,256,433. Our online and social media audiences both grew by 13 percent in 2023.

“We are delighted to see an increase in the number of people who visited the National Gallery,” said Kaywin Feldman, director of the National Gallery of Art. “We are honored to have brought great works of art directly to nearly four million onsite visitors last year and millions more online. I am grateful to the Gallery’s dedicated staff for attracting, welcoming, and engaging so many visitors through their great work.”

April and July were the busiest months of the year, bringing more than 400,000 visitors each. Visitation on Thanksgiving Day was the highest in the last 10 years, and April 8 set the record for daily attendance in 2023, with 30,193 visitors.

In addition to our standard closures on December 25 and January 1, the National Gallery was partially closed for three days in July and August due to a General Services Administration hot water outage and severe weather.
