National Gallery of Art Awards 16 Summer Internships to Outstanding Students from Ten States, the District of Columbia, and Three Foreign Countries

Washington, DC—The National Gallery of Art welcomed 16 graduate students and recent bachelor’s degree recipients to participate in its 2010 summer internship program. The international group, including interns from ten states, the District of Columbia, and three foreign countries, was selected through a competitive process. The nine-week internship began on Monday, June 14, and continues through Friday, August 13.

Interns are chosen for this rigorous program based on a strong interest in museum work, outstanding academic achievement, and letters of recommendation, among other relevant criteria. In addition to placements in traditional areas of museum internships, such as curatorial, education, conservation, and administration, the Gallery also offers internships in horticulture, graphic design, architecture, publishing, archives, music, and security. As part of their regular work schedule, interns attend biweekly seminars that familiarize them with the broad spectrum of museum work by visiting Gallery departments, staff, functions, and programs.

Support for the internship program comes from individual gifts and endowment funds, and the program is administered by the department of academic programs in the division of education. 2010 National Gallery of Art Summer Interns

Lauren Algee
Brentwood, Tennessee
Lauren received her BA (journalism) from Indiana University and is currently studying for an MS (information science) at the University of Texas at Austin. She previously worked as a digital imaging intern at the Smithsonian Institution National Anthropological Archive and as a photographic archives intern at the Briscoe Center for American History. This summer Lauren is working with Gallery Archives to help organize, preserve, and describe archival documents as well as assist with digital preservation and database development.

Lauren Chapman
Dallas, Texas
Lauren earned her BS (business administration) from the University of Southern California and is completing a joint MA/MBA (arts administration) at Southern Methodist University. Previously, she worked as a marketing and event management intern for the Dallas Art Fair, as a communications and marketing intern for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and as a client services and special events intern for Christie’s, Inc. This summer Lauren is working in the Gallery’s office of special events, where she assists with daily operations, cataloguing event records, and creating a presentation album of event photographs.

Sarah Cortell
Parma, Ohio
Sarah earned her BA (art history) from Boston University and is studying for her MA (arts policy and administration) at the Ohio State University. Before coming to the Gallery, she served as a Katzenberger Foundation Art History Intern at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, as a development assistant at the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, and as an external relations intern at Harvard University’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. Sarah is working this summer in the department of teacher, school, and family programs and assisting with the National Teacher Institute.

Liliane Ehrhart
Paris, France
Liliane received a BA (art and literature) and an MA (art and literature) from the Université Paris Diderot. She has also earned an MA (information and communication sciences) and is completing a master of advanced studies, both at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. Liliane recently completed an internship at the Forum des Images, Paris. This summer she is working with the staff in both the department of French paintings and the department of exhibition programs, assisting with research on the upcoming Gauguin exhibition.

Nash Garton
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Nash just completed his BA (material culture preservation) at the University of Delaware. Before coming to the Gallery, he worked as an art conservation intern at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and at the New Mexico History Museum. This summer Nash is working in the department of paper conservation, helping to organize, catalogue, and identity photographic processes of works in the study collection.

Joanna Gohmann
Floyds Knobs, Indiana
Joanna earned a BA (art history) from Kenyon College and recently completed an MA (art history) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she will begin her PhD work in the fall. Joanna previously worked as an education intern at the North Carolina Museum of Art and volunteered at the Ackland Art Museum. From 2006 to 2008 she taught in East Baton Rouge Parish schools through the Teach for America program. This summer Joanna is working with the department of adult programs, presenting Gallery Talks and assisting with all aspects of the art information program.

Sophia Greenbaum
Washington, DC
Sophia earned a BA (double major: architecture and art history) from Wellesley College and is currently completing an MA (art and museum studies) at Georgetown University. Before her internship at the Gallery, Sophia worked as a curatorial intern at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She has also served as executive director of the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council and worked on the architectural consulting staff of Steve Winter Associates, Inc. Sophia is working with the development department this summer, assisting with fundraising and administrative duties.

Sabrina Hughes
Tampa, Florida
Sabrina acquired both her BA (humanities) and MA (art history) from the University of South Florida. Before her term at the Gallery, she was a curatorial intern at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, the director of operations and curator at the Centre Gallery, University of South Florida, and an executive associate for public relations and development at the Hillsborough Education Foundation in Tampa. This summer Sabrina is working on the upcoming Charles Marville exhibition with the department of photographs.

Sarah Hurtt
Kalispell, Montana
Sarah received a BFA (photography, printmaking, and art education) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and completed an MA (art education) and an MFA (printmaking), both at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She previously worked as an education intern at the Madison Children’s Museum and as an art and photography teacher at Lake View High School in Chicago. Sarah is spending the summer in the design department’s silkscreen shop, assisting staff with the production of graphics for exhibitions and signage throughout the Gallery.

John Jackson
Pilot Mountain, North Carolina
John received his BA (double major: French and art history) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and just completed his MFA (museum exhibition, planning, and design) at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He previously worked as an exhibition design intern at the de Young Museum, as a museum intern at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and as an exhibition design intern at the North Carolina Museum of Art. John is working in the design department this summer, assisting designers and architects with upcoming exhibitions and other projects.

Anastasia Karpova
Birmingham, Alabama
Anastasia completed her BA (classical studies) at Washington and Lee University and is currently studying for her MA (art history) at American University. Before her term at the Gallery, she worked as an interpretive guide and intern at the Hirshhorn Museum, as an art teacher for ArtWorks in Bethesda, and as an intern for the Art School at the Austin Museum of Art. This summer, Anastasia is working in the department of teacher, school, and family programs, helping with all aspects of the summer family programs.

Lelia Packer
New York City, New York
Lelia earned a BA (double major: art history and international studies) from the University of Chicago and an MA (art history) from Columbia University. She is currently working on her PhD (art history) at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Lelia previously worked as a graduate intern in the department of prints and drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as an editorial intern for the Society of Architectural Historians, and as an education program assistant at the Art Institute of Chicago. This summer Lelia is working with the department of northern baroque paintings on the systematic catalogue projects and with the department of academic programs on upcoming public programs.

Veronika Poier
Wasendorf, Austria
Veronika is completing two MA degrees (art history and French) at the University of Vienna. Before coming to the Gallery, she worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Contemporary History (University of Vienna), as a conservation assistant for UNIDAM, the digital database for the University of Vienna, and as a library assistant at the Abbey of Seckau. Veronika is working in the library image collections department, helping to catalogue, inventory, and digitize the library’s collection of rare photographs of art and architecture.

Tate Strickland
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Tate just finished his BA (graphic design) at American University. He previously worked as an advertising design intern at the Kennedy Center and as a Web intern at Free Range Studios in Washington, DC. He also served as the managing editor for design for American University’s student newspaper, The Eagle. This summer Tate is assisting the publishing office in the preparation of exhibition-related publications and materials for distribution and use at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Brittany Strupp
Washington, DC
Brittany received her BA (art history) from Colgate University and is completing her MA (art history) at the University of Virginia. She previously worked as both a curatorial assistant and administrative assistant at the Baltimore Museum of Art, as a volunteer at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and as a curatorial intern at the National Museum of African Art. Brittany is working with the department of American and British paintings this summer, assisting with research for the Gallery’s upcoming exhibition on George Bellows.

Florina Titz
Constanţa, Romania
Florina completed her BA (philology) at Ovidius University in Constanţa and is working on her MFA (film and video production) at the University of Iowa. She previously worked as a translator for Mar Publishing House in Constanţa and as a video artist for the Ovidius National Theater. Florina’s film projects have received awards and been screened at film festivals in both the US and abroad. This summer she is assisting the department of exhibition programs with the production of documentary films, video podcasts, and other materials in conjunction with upcoming special exhibitions.
