Time Exposed
The photographs shown here give form to the literal passage of time, as well as to the fleeting evidence of historic and cultural change. As the title “Time Exposed” indicates, these works by Uta Barth, Linda Connor, Vera Lutter, Chris McCaw, and Hiroshi Sugimoto are both meditations on the nature of time and representations of its passing. Working against the modernist attraction to speed, instantaneity, and the decisive moment, these artists explore slower rhythms. They deliberately plan their exposures, which frequently extend over long periods of time—several hours, or even days. Yet their intention is not to document a scene more thoroughly but to create new experiences that alter our perception, often by compressing passages of time into a single exposure. Striving to heighten our understanding of time, they also create pictures of things that we are rarely patient enough to observe or that our eyes can never see.
