A New Look: Samuel F. B. Morse's Gallery of the Louvre

Overview: The Gallery of the Louvre by Samuel F. B. Morse was shown in this focus exhibition of a single painting. The recently conserved work was on loan from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

On September 26 author David McCullough presented a lecture on his book The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris, which includes a chapter on Morse and the painting. The lecture was followed by a book signing. On October 9 Peter J. Brownlee, associate curator, Terra Foundation for American Art, presented the lecture "A New Look: Samuel F. B. Morse's Gallery of the Louvre." The teacher workshop "The Artist in the Museum" was held on February 4 and 18. A documentary video produced by the Terra Foundation for American Art concerning the extensive conservation treatment of the painting was shown in the West Building Lecture Hall on several occasions while the work was on view.
