Overview: A focus exhibition of The Annunciation by Van Eyck was displayed with illuminations from 2 books of hours that illustrated the influence of French manuscript illumination on Van Eyck's iconography and style. The painting was returned to public view in the exhibition after a 2-year restoration. Andrew Mellon had acquired The Annunciation from Russia's Hermitage Museum in 1930 and donated it to the National Gallery when the museum was founded.
Organization: The exhibition curator was John Hand, curator of northern Renaissance paintings at the National Gallery of Art.
