This exhibition is no longer on view at the National Gallery.

The exhibit featured reproductions from 24 European manuscripts, ranging in date from the 7th-century Book of Durrow to King Rene’s Book of Love from the 15th century. Although the originals are scattered among collections in New York, Dublin, Vienna, and elsewhere, the facsimile books shown here were all part of the National Gallery of Art Library’s holdings. The Grandes Heures and Belles Heures of Jean de Berry were displayed side by side, while the Utrecht Psalter, Grandval Bible, and more facsimiles not on view were shelved nearby. A large part of our very fine collection of facsimiles and books on medieval illumination are the gifts of Lessing J. Rosenwald and Carl Nordenfalk.
