Ground Floor, Central Gallery
This exhibition is no longer on view at the National Gallery.
Overview: 70 paintings and drawings created by 14 American artists for the NASA Art Program were on view. The NASA Art Program, begun in March 1962 under administrator James E. Webb, sent prominent artists to Cape Canaveral (Cape Kennedy) to observe events and activities. Graphic reproductions of their works about the space program were made available to the public. Among the artists chosen were Lamar Dodd, Dong Kingman, Paul Sample, Mitchell Jamieson, Peter Hurd, and Norman Rockwell. H. Lester Cooke, National Gallery of Art consultant to NASA, was coordinator. This was the first Gallery exhibition organized at the request of a government agency since World War II.
