Overview: 26 paintings and 6 drawings were on view, by artists from Rembrandt van Rijn to Pablo Picasso. The collection had been acquired by the investment banker André Meyer, of Paris and New York, and his wife. This was the second collection compiled by the Meyers, who had begun to collect paintings in Paris in the early 1920s. The first one was lost during World War II. The paintings in the exhibition received special treatment by the National Gallery: after removal from the Meyer apartment at the Carlyle House, they came to Washington in a convoy with police escort, were returned in the same manner, and were rehung on the apartment walls by Gallery staff. This was the second in a series at the Gallery devoted to private collections.
