Overview: 117 works in oil, watercolor, tempera, pencil, and crayon by 83 artists were shown. They had been selected for prizes and this exhibition by a committee of 5 judges. More than 1,500 entries were received in an art competition sponsored by Life magazine, which was open to all personnel of the Army, Navy, Air Corps, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. The only condition regarding subject matter was that it relate to scenes and events connected with the artists' own experience while on active duty. Under the auspices of the American Federation of Arts, the exhibition toured the United States with stops including Saint Paul, Baltimore, and Syracuse.
