George Henry was the son of Sir Robert Smyth, 5th baronet [1744-1802]. His father was a member of Parliament for Colchester, Essex from 1780-1790 before moving to France. When his father died in Paris, Sir Robert Graham was appointed as trustee for the boy. Years later, in 1836, Graham named George Henry an executor of his will and bequeathed to him the portrait of himself done by Copley, now in the NGA (1942.4.1)
