Edwin was the great-grandson of Adam Babcock, a sitter for John Singleton Copley painting now in NGA (1978-19.1). Adam was the son of Dr. Joshua and Hannah Babcock of Westerly, Rhode Island, and was a merchant and ship owner in New Haven, Connecticut. He was an ardent patriot during the American Revolution, outfitting a privateer for American use and supplying the army with rice and woolen cloth. He may have moved to Calcutta, India after the war, before settling in Boston. (Parker, Barbara Neville, and Wheler, Anne Bolling. John Singleton Copley, American Portraits Boston, 1938: 29-30.)
