Joseph Brummer was born in Yugoslavia. He studied sculpture in Paris under Auguste Rodin. The success of the gallery he opened in Paris earned him the title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour from the French government. In 1914 he established the Brummer Gallery, Inc. and specialized in Greek, Romanesque, and Gothic sculptures. He also dealt in furniture, gold objects, and bronzes. Most of the sculpture he sold went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His clients also included The Cloisters, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Saint Louis City Art Museum, the Cleveland Museum, the Cincinnati Art Museum, John D. Rockefeller Jr., and William Randolph Hearst. Joseph's brother was Ernest Brummer--see Robert C.
