The daughter of Charles Farner and Mabel Frances (née Flynn) Cork, Gertrude Louise Cork was born in Aberdeen, Washington. She married Norton Hopkins Swezey on 17 March 1941, at Coxsackie, New York. Gertrude's grandmother, Martha Gertrude Farner Cork [b. 1843], gave her a portrait of her maternal great-grandparents, Samuel Green and Martha ("Patty") Hills Sargent, and four of their children. The picture, now in the NGA, was painted in 1800 in the Sargents' home in Charlestown, Massachusetts by an unknown American artist.
