The Post family were among the early Dutch settlers in what is today the state of New York. Elias Post, a gunsmith, was born in New York in 1708. His daughter Catalyntje was born on 22 May, and baptized on 3 June 1733 in Schenectady, according to family genealogies. She married Zeger Van Santvoord on 18 April 1756, and died at the age of seventy-seven on 17 June 1810. A portrait of c. 1747 by an unknown colonial American painter is thought to be of Catalyntje. This picture (now in the NGA) was passed down in the Post family until its sale (by 1950) by Katherine Olcott, a descendant of Catalyntje Post.
