It is thought that the Cistercian abbey of Poblet was the original owner of a ciborium, which later became part of the Widener Collection, and is now in the NGA. A 1935 Widener catalogue somewhat mistakenly called the location a cathedral. Poblet became the burial place of Spanish kings after its establishment in the twelfth century. The individual portraits of the Three Kings on the NGA ciborium perhaps reflect the royal ties that the abbey had with the country. Many liturgical objects were removed from Poblet in 1835, when the monks left and the abbey was then sacked by soldiers during the First Carlist War.
