Woodruff Weaver was a direct descendant of the Irish-born Virginia painter John Toole (1815-1860). Weaver inherited through his mother, Mrs. Beulah Barnes Weaver (granddaughter of Toole and herself a painter), a picture by Toole of a skating scene, completed around 1835. Weaver sold the painting (now in the NGA) in 1955 to "naive" art collectors Edgar and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch.
