Florence Hammersley was the daughter of Prudence Caton Thompson by her first husband, Thomas Hammersley of Baltimore. She inherited from her mother a portrait of her (Florence's) cousin, Adelina Morton [b. 1802; probably d. as a child], daughter of Captain Robert and Anne Thompson Morton, Anne being the sister of Prudence. The picture (now in the NGA) was painted around 1810 by Baltimore-based naive artist Joshua Johnson. It was passed in turn to a cousin, Mrs. Charles Albert Read [née Lucie Buckleam] of Salem, Massachusetts, a descendant of Prudence Thompson's second husband [m. 1803], Capt. George Hobbs of Laurel, Delaware.
