American, active late 18th century - early 19th century

Moreton, Robert and Anne Capt.

Biography

Captain Robert and Anne Groves Morton came from one of the tidewater counties of Maryland or Virginia, and settled in Fell's Point. They had a daughter, Adelina, born 18 January 1802, as recorded in the register of St. Paul's (Episcopal) Parish, Baltimore; Adelina is said to have died as a child. A portrait of the girl (now in the NGA) was painted by American naive artist Joshua Johnson around 1810; the picture was passed down through the family of Mrs. Morton's sister, Prudence Caton Thompson.
