Katherine Mahon Hunter--Katy to those who knew her--was the cousin of Mrs. Daisy Cross Somers through Daisy's mother, Emily Francis Hunter Cross. Katy Hunter obtained from her cousin a portrait of their ancestor, Sarah Ogden Gustin. Mrs. Somers had been cleaning out the attic and only wanted the frame of the picture; she had relegated the portrait to a pile of things to be burned when Katy Hunter rescued it and took it home with her. The picture (now in the NGA) is believed to have been painted by American naive artist Joshua Johnson around 1798-1800.
