Paine, Hamilton Child

American, active mid 20th century

Biography

Hamilton Child Paine was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Child Paine, and descended from John Paine, the nephew of Captain [1735-1790] and Mrs. [née Anna Paine, d. 1811] Samuel Chandler. Hamilton inherited jointly with his two sisters--Agnes C. Paine and Prudence Paine Kwiecien--portraits of Captain and Mrs. Chandler, which had been passed down inthe Paine family. They were painted by the Captain's brother, Winthrop Chandler, around 1780. The Paine siblings lent the pictures (now in the NGA) to the Worcester [Massachusetts] Art Museum from 1947 until 1955, when they sold them to American folk art collectors Col. Edgar and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch.
