John Paine was raised by his aunt and uncle, Captain [1735-1790] and Mrs. [née Anna Paine, d. 1811] Samuel Chandler, who had no children of their own. Upon Capt. Chandler's death, John inherited the former's 300 acre farm, as well as portraits of Samuel and Anna, painted by the Captain's brother, Winthrop Chandler, around 1780. The pictures (now in the NGA) were passed to Paine's son, John Paine, Jr., and descended in the Paine family until they were sold in 1955.
