The eldest son of British painter John Hoppner and his American-born wife, Phoebe (née White), Catherine Hampden Hoppner attended Eton from 1796-99. He later became a magistrate for the East India Company and lived in Bengal. As a child in 1791, his father portrayed him and his two younger brothers, Richard Belgrave [1786-1872] and Wilson Lascelles [1788-after 1827], in a painting now in the NGA. Two more siblings were born later.
