The son of British painter John Hoppner and his American-born wife Phoebe (née White), Richard Hoppner entered the diplomatic service and worked as the consul at Venice for about ten years. He was a close friend of Lord Byron, with whom he corresponded. Richard was portrayed in a 1791 painting (now in the NGA) by his father along with his two brothers Catherine Hampden [1784-1845] and Wilson Lascelles [1788-after 1827]. Two more siblings were born later.
