The wife of British painter John Hoppner, Phoebe (née White) was the daughter of an American couple. After her father's death, she came with her mother Patience White to England. In 1781 she married Hoppner [1758-1810]; altogether they had five children. Their father portrayed three of them--Catherine Hampden [a boy, 1784-1845], Richard Belgrave [1786-1872] and Wilson Lascelles [1788-after 1827]--in a painting dated 1791 (now in the NGA).
