Sir Paul was a knight of three different Grand Cross Orders: of Bath, of St. Michael and St. George, and of the Royal Victorian Order. He was also a Knight of the Grace of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. An Honorary Doctor of Laws, for a time he served as a Justice of the Peace. His many military appointments included: Colonel in the Scots Guards, hon. Col. of the 3rd Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment, Brigade- Major, Home District (1871-76), Assistant Military Secretary of Ireland, Military Attaché to Berlin (1878-81), Deputy Adjutant-General, South Africa (1888-90), Maj.-Gen. Home District (1892-97), Lt.-Gen. South Africa (1899-1902), Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Malta (1915-19). Various honors he received include: Constable of the Tower (1920), Grand Officer Order of the Crown of Italy, and Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour of France. He succeeded his father as Baron in 1891. Sir Paul married on 18 June 1878, but his wife Evelyn (daughter of Sir Frederick Bathurst, 3rd Bt.) died less than a year later, on 2 June 1879. He married secondly on 9 January 1884, to Mary Ethel [d. 1941], daughter of William Ayshford Sanford, of Nynehead Court. They had three sons and two daughters.
