Probably the sitter for a portrait, now NGA 1937.1.46, by early Netherlandish artist Michel Sittow, Don Diego de Guevara was an important member of the Habsburg court in the Netherlands. Guevara's family came from Santander in the north of Spain. He probably arrived in the Netherlands around the late-fifteenth century. Named to the Spanish Order of Calatrava, he served the house of Burgundy for over forty years. Some of the positions he held include that of maître d'hôtel for the household of Philip the Fair and for Queen Joanna of Castile during the journey of Philip and Joanna to Spain in 1506. Having completed several diplomatic missions to England and Spain, he was named Receiver of the Royal Revenues for Castile in 1517. Various references to his collection seem to indicate that he was an active art patron and collector. Don Diego had an illegitimate son, Felipe de Guevara.
