Sir Frederick succeeded his father in 1893. Educated at Wellington College, he served as Justice of the Peace in Northamptonshire. His various military posts included: Major, late 3rd Batallion Northampton Regiment (Militia); Assistant Provost Marshall from 1915-19; former Captain of the 2nd Batallion, Northampton Regiment, service in the South African War, 1902; and service in WWI, 1914-19, during which he was twice wounded and received the Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre of France. In 1913 he married Eileen Minna Higham [d. 1965] of London; they had two sons, and were divorced in 1933. He married again on 16 August 1933 to Frances Joyce Tyrwhitt-Drake of Dorset.
