The Earl succeeded his father in 1834. Before that time, he was Lord Althorp, and a member of the House of Commons. From 1830-34, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1814, he married Ester [d. 1818], only daughter and heiress of Richard Acklom of Wiseton Hall, Nottinghamshire. He died without children and thus was suceeded by his brother, Frederick, as 4th Earl.
