Born Franz Catzenstein, he was the founder of the Galerie Matthiesen in Berlin in 1923. Married first in 1920 to Maria Matthiesen (1896-1936), he changed his name to Franz Zatzenstein-Matthiesen and later went by Francis M. Zatzenstein or Francis Matthiesen. Zatzenstein left Germany in 1933 and went eventually to London, where by 1936 he had established a new Matthiesen Gallery. The Berlin gallery, under the direction of long-time colleague Heinz Mansfeld, was forced to close in 1939.
With his first wife, he had a daughter Maren Beate Antonia Zatzenstein Matthiesen (b. 1921). Zatzenstein married secondly to Olga Petrovna Tarrash with whom he had a son, Patrick Matthiesen. With his third wife Fredericke Katherina Früh (b. 1906) he had a daughter Suzanne Matthiesen.
A collection of old master drawings from Matthiesen/Zatzenstein's estate were sold at Sotheby's London, 21 October 1963.
