The only child of Anthony Hall of Flass, Durham, Frank Hall Standish was born in the parish of Darlington, Durham. He was cousin and heir-in-law to Sir Frank Standish of Lancashire, succeeding to the estates but not the title of the baronetcy in 1812; by royal license has assumed the name and arms of Standish. His favorite residence was in Seville, Spain, but he also spent considerable time travelling in France and Europe. His income was largely spent on the acquisition of art and literature. Standish died unmarried in 1849 in Cadiz, en route from Seville. Standish bequeathed his important collection of Spanish pictures and drawings to Louis-Philippe, as a mark of respect to the French, and they were displayed at the Galerie Espagnole of the Louvre until 1848. With his abdication, Louise-Philippe claimed the art collection as his persoanl possession, a claim which was ultimately allowed. The collection was sold at auction in 1853.
