Biography
French soldier and Duke of Dalmatia, Soult formed a large collection of Spanish pictures, mainly through looting during the French campaign in Spain from 1808. Soult's collection was assembled in Paris, and in 1823 he began negotiations with William Buchanan for the sale of the pictures to English collectors. Buchanan arranged an exhibition of paintings from Soult's gallery in London in 1840. A sale of Soult's collection took place in Paris, after his death, in May 1852.
