Margaret Seligman was the daughter of Isaac and Greta Loeb Seligman of New York. Her father was the head of the banking firm of J&W Seligman. In 1918 Margaret Seligman married financier Sam A. Lewisohn (1884-1951), the son of Adolph Lewisohn (c. 1849-1938). The Lewisohns were great collectors and patrons of the arts. Sam served as a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. Margaret Lewisohn's particular interest was education. In 1922 she had joined the Public Education Association and in 1941 was hired as its Director. Margaret Seligman Lewisohn died in a car crash in 1954. Parts of the Lewisohn art collection were donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and to the National Gallery of Art.
