Prominant Bostonian Abigail Adams Homans was the great-great-grandaughter of the second president of the United States, John Adams, and great-grandaughter of the sixth president, John Quincy Adams. Her father was named John Quincy Adams, as well, and her mother was of the Crowningshield family from Salem. She was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Paris, and spent a year in Britain with one of her uncles, Henry Adams. Her other uncle was Brooks Adams, also an author. Abigail wrote candidly of her childhood in her 1966 memoirs, Education by Uncles. Abigail married Robert Homans (d. 1934), a Harvard educated lawyer, in 1907. They had a son, George Caspar Homans, and two daughters, Mrs. Carl J. Gilbert, and Mrs. Henry Mason.
