Scottish collector Arthur Kay was the son of a textile industrialist and joined his father's firm in 1887. He was educated throughout Europe and studied art in Paris. Married to the artist Katherine Cameron, his collection included Impressionist painting, Chinese bronzes, English glass and Japanese lacquer. He sold some of his collection during his lifetime; there was also an estate sale held at Christie's in 1943.
