Alexander T. Reid was part of a large and wealthy Scottish family. His father, James, had founded the Hyde Park Locomotive works in Glasgow. Alexander followed a familial taste in collecting Barbizon paintings, as well as works by Boudin, Fantin-Latour, and British portraiture and landscape painting.
