Lyonnaise collector Aynard succeeded his father as head of the family banking enterprise and also engaged in political activities. In 1871 he established the liberal "Journal de Lyon;" eventually he was head of the local Chamber of Commerce. In 1902 he was elevated to the Institute de France. His collecting centered on art of the middle ages, although he did also collect early Renaissance Italian art, including Lipp, Piero di Cosimo, and Botticelli.
