The elder Enthoven was a supporter and patron of van Gogh during his years in The Hague; at his death in 1920 his art collection, including 48 van Gogh paintings, were sold at auction. John James Enthoven was married between 1919-1924 to Janneke Johanna van Nijmegen Schonegal-Rutgers.
