Ellen Peabody was descended from a prominent Salem shipping family. In 1859 she married the eminent jurist William Crowninshield Endicott (1826-1900), who served on the Supreme Court of Massachusetts and was President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of War from 1885 to 1889. Both of the Endicotts were from patrician Massachusetts families, and inherited substantial wealth. During the couple's time in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Endicott was a well-known figure in diplomatic and governmental circles. Portraits of her (1951.20.1) and her daughter, Mary (1958.2.1), by John Singer Sargent are in the NGA collection.
