Betty Parsons was both an artist and an influencial art dealer in New York. She began her career in 1922 by studying in Paris with Bourdelle and Zadkine, returning to the US in 1933. In 1938 she began working in Mary Sullivan's art gallery. After Sullivan's death, Parsons worked in the Wakefield bookshop and in Martimer Brandt's gallery, showing contemporary American painters such as Gottlieg, Hofmann, Reinhardt and Rothko. In 1947 she opened the Betty Parsons Gallery and continued her support of the Abstract Expressionists.
