John Truman Stoddert (1790-1870) was the son of William Truman Stoddert and a 1810 graduate in law at Princeton. He served in the in the Maryland House of Delegates (1820) and in the U.S. House of Representatives (1833-1835). Stoddert's great uncle was William Smallwood (1732-1792), major-general in the American revolutionary army and governor of Maryland from 1785-1788. Stoddert inherited a portrait of Smallwood now in the NGA (1947.17.89). After he retired from politics, John Truman Stoddert returned to farming on his family estate, West Hatten, in Charles County, where he died and was buried in the family burial ground.
