Stoddert was the nephew of William Smallwood (1732-1792), major-general in the American revolutionary army and governor of Maryland from 1785-1788. Stoddert inherited a portrait of Smallwood now in the NGA (1947.17.89). Stoddert's son John Truman Stoddert (1790-1870) served in the Maryland House of Delegates and in the U.S. House of Representatives. Along with his uncle, William Stoddert was a founding member of the Society of the Cincinnati in 1783. [Compiled from sources and references recorded on CMS]
