Niece of the painter Fantin-Latour [1836-1904], Sonia was the daughter of his sister Marie. Marie left Paris for Saint Petersburg in 1866 to marry a Russian army colonel named Yanovski. Sonia later married a Russian by the name of Nikanoff. A portrait of Sonia at age sixteen by her uncle [now in the National Gallery of Art, 1963.10.145] was probably executed during a visit to Paris by Sonia and her mother.
