Robert Woods Bliss [1875-1962], collector and diplomat, was born St. Louis and married Mildred Barnes [1879-1969]. In 1920 they purchased Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown and extensively renovated the house and gardens. In 1940 the couple donated Dumbarton Oaks and their collection of Pre-Columbian and Byzantine art to Harvard University, which maintains it as a museum and research facility.
